What MuseumPlus brings
MuseumPlus is a web-based collection management system with configurable modules, forms and reports. Its established institutional use is a legitimate reason to consider it for complex museum operations. The value may lie in how reliably it carries existing work across departments, rather than in any one new feature.
Ask your registrar, collections manager and curator to show the procedures that are difficult to replace: multi-object loans, movement histories, exhibition preparation or reports used by external partners. Then compare the implementation effort for those procedures. A system that already matches them can be worth more than a promising shortcut elsewhere.
Where Art+ fits
Art+ is Zetcom’s modular solution for private and institutional art collections. It should not automatically be treated as a cheaper or smaller version of MuseumPlus. Ask for the product that matches your collection’s requirements, and compare the resulting scope and quotation.
Product names matter during procurement. A demonstration of one configuration does not establish that the same fields, publishing functions or integrations are included in another. Request a single list of the products, modules and services covered by the offer.
When to evaluate Contxt
Contxt is intended for small through large institutions that want collection records, curatorial material and public content connected in one working environment. It is particularly relevant when staff spend substantial time reconciling names, resolving duplicates or maintaining multiple language versions.
Those priorities do not remove the need to prove core museum operations. If your team depends on specialised loan forms or detailed movement controls, include them in the Contxt pilot. An automation advantage is useful only alongside the required everyday functions.

Compare the public catalogue fairly
eMuseumPlus explicitly supports multilingual online collections and draws on MuseumPlus records. Its separate subscription is a budgeting distinction, not evidence that publication requires manual re-entry. It offers a documented route for museums that need a public collection alongside their internal system.
Contxt describes integrated multilingual publishing. Compare a real publication sequence in both proposals: select a record, exclude restricted fields, review a translation, publish it and correct it later. Inspect the visitor’s search and language switch as well as the editor’s screen. Include configuration, design and ongoing editorial work in the cost.
Check the authority workflow, not the label
Contxt’s workflow material describes automated authority reconciliation and data enrichment with staff approval. GND, SIKART, Getty ULAN and Wikidata serve different purposes; ask which sources the proposed workflow actually uses.
The reviewed Zetcom pages do not establish equivalent native automated reconciliation. They also do not justify saying that MuseumPlus lacks authority management or cannot be connected to external services. Request a demonstration and a clear distinction between standard features, configuration and custom work. Both vendors should preserve local research when an external source disagrees.
Measure migration effort
Use a migration sample that includes repeated people, changing attributions, historical spellings and images with differing publication rights. Evaluate the number of unresolved exceptions and the hours needed to review them. An imported record count is a poor measure of migration quality.
For an existing MuseumPlus installation, include the cost of replacing reports, integrations and public URLs. For a first implementation, compare staff onboarding and data preparation. Neither a mature product nor a new workflow makes a difficult legacy collection clean by itself.

Swiss hosting is a concrete requirement
Contxt specifies Zurich infrastructure and database backups at a second Swiss location. This is relevant when an institution wants managed hosting in Switzerland.
Zetcom also documents Swiss hosting: its June 2025 processing agreement lists hosting providers in Switzerland and Germany. MuseumPlus can additionally run in-house. Confirm the location assigned to your deployment and backups rather than treating the company’s Swiss origin as a location guarantee. Include eMuseumPlus, migration storage and any connected services in the hosting discussion.
Code availability and data portability
MuseumPlus is proprietary, but its documented API provides a route for exchanging data. The practical question is whether the institution can extract everything it needs: media, identifiers, relationships, repeatable fields and relevant history.
Contxt plans an open-source edition; its public release is still pending. Do not price a procurement decision as though that release already provides independent maintenance today. For both suppliers, request a sample export and agree on assistance, fees and public-site continuity when the contract ends.
Make the price comparison complete
Contxt lists CHF 135 per editing user per month with annual billing, or CHF 150 billed monthly, excluding VAT. Read-only guests are free; editing and approvals require the appropriate paid access. Zetcom pricing needs a quote, with the publishing subscription included where required.
Build a five-year comparison covering migration, licences, hosting, training, integrations, upgrades and public presentation. MuseumPlus may be the stronger choice where its established workflows reduce implementation risk. Contxt may fit better where a demonstrated reduction in data maintenance and publishing work justifies the transition. Agree on those outcomes before selecting either system.
