bitforms gallery continues its fifteen-year anniversary season with Vision Instruments, Björn Schülke's second solo show with the gallery. Inspired by the 1966 German science fiction series Space Patrol Orion, Schülke creates kinetic sculptures blending utopian and dystopian aesthetics — pseudo-scientific instruments like beam-emitting engines and mirror machines. These functional-appearing but ultimately futile devices incorporate solar panels, infrared surveillance mechanisms, and air propulsion systems that operate unpredictably. The artist employs industrial design methods to craft anthropomorphic contraptions that respond to environmental energy. Defender, a kinetic sound sculpture, orbits around itself.
