Created in 1992, Surface Tension is Rafael Lozano-Hemmer's inaugural interactive artwork. The piece features a giant human eye that follows each observer with Orwellian precision, inspired by Georges Bataille's 1932 text and contemporary surveillance concerns. The artist addresses themes of surveillance, deception, and perception in contemporary society. Presented as an immersive large-scale 4K display at The Armory Show, Booth S7. Lozano-Hemmer was the first Mexican artist to exhibit at the Venice Biennale (Palazzo Van Axel, 2007). Recent major exhibitions include presentations at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, the AmorePacific Museum in Seoul, and a retrospective co-produced by Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal and SFMOMA.
