Curated by Claudia Hart, "Stone Sky Over Thingworld" features four artists part of an international generation utilizing technology with related artistic practices. The title, proposed by the artists themselves, suggests "a world turned upside down, where things are preferred over humans," reminiscent of Magritte's surrealism. Unlike earlier media art generations, these artists emerged from humanities-oriented art schools globally, treating the Internet as both communication and distribution system. Their shared concerns include dystopian sci-fi themes, pop art aesthetics employing internet advertising conventions, and sacred geometry with surrealist rather than formalist sensibilities. Hart notes their critical orientation rooted in contemporary art discourse rather than utopian technological embrace, and a return to classicism and figuration connected to minimalist aesthetics used in high-tech branding.
