bitforms gallery is pleased to present Sound Mass, an exhibition by Jeff Talman exploring the visual and sonic resonance of the cathedral of Cologne, Germany. Talman investigates the concept of silence and "negative sound" by capturing and analyzing the ambient room tone of the cathedral's interior space. The exhibition features Endless Columns, a seven-channel video installation of panning shots of cathedral columns exploring rhythm, texture, and temporal scales; Sound Mass, an eight-channel sound field derived from extracted resonant frequencies of the cathedral's ambient acoustic environment; and breath–sky and breath-stone, one-channel video installations depicting the artist's breath vapor against stone and sky backdrops. Opening reception: Friday, May 20, 2005, 6–8 PM.
