Jeff Talman creates sonic installations by examining how interior spaces resonate acoustically. Living in Europe, he was influenced by the vastly different sounds of large interior spaces — cathedrals, castles and museums. For resonance3, Talman analyzed the gallery's acoustic resonance and tuned steel objects to match those frequencies. Steel cylinders, pipes, and tubes are cut to produce matching resonant frequencies, creating a 24-channel soundspace installation across two gallery spaces. Two simultaneous installations comprise the work: "sound cylinders" features vertically and horizontally hung pipes evoking wind chimes and organ pipes with abstracted configurations. "Sonic columns" presents eight columns of pure sound using truncated eight-inch pipe sections stacked with empty space between, allowing viewers to complete the visual and auditory experience. Talman is classically trained as composer, pianist, and orchestral director. He began computer sound work in 1984. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, he lived in Prague and has primarily resided in New York City.
