For twelve years, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer developed interactive installations creating "connective, social and performative experiences." Unlike typical multimedia art designed for individual engagement, his work emphasizes group interaction and establishes relationships between local or remote participants. This marked his inaugural exhibition in a commercial NYC gallery. The artist employs "relational space" to materialize data within physical and architectural environments rather than virtual simulations. His "Relational Architecture" series uses robotics, real-time graphics, film projections, positional sound, internet links, cell phone interfaces, video and ultrasonic sensors, and LED screens to transform urban spaces.
