bitforms gallery presents a two-person exhibition with German multimedia sculptor Björn Schülke and New York-based musician, composer, and programmer R. Luke DuBois. This exhibition marks the New York premiere of DuBois' art installations and Schülke's United States debut. Schülke designs objects that playfully transform live spatial energy into active responses in sculptural form. Included are twelve Solar Kinetic Objects — delicate blue and white active sculptures powered by solar cells — along with Nervous, a quivering orange ball of fur that emits electro beeps as viewers approach, and Aerophon #4, a motorized pipe organ resembling a guitar that responds to motion with bellows of sound. DuBois presents work exploring the constructions of pop-cultural ephemera through "time-lapse phonography." Billboard is a 37-minute sound installation using all 857 songs that topped Billboard's Hot 100 since 1958. Academy arrays visual and sonic averages of every Academy Award Best Picture winner since 1927. Play collapses every Playboy centerfold from 1953–2004 into a collective portrait of temporal shifts in photographic representation.
