Gary Hill's inaugural solo exhibition at bitforms gallery features phenomenological investigations into perception and media. The presentation includes two major bodies of work: "Cutting Corners Creates More Sides," a mixed media installation with dual-channel video projection and embedded speakers, and the "SELF ( )" series of acrylic sculptures with embedded cameras and padded eyepieces. The SELF ( ) series comprises five sculptures (SELF A through SELF F, omitting E) that capture live feeds of viewers while deliberately excluding facial recognition, creating disorienting portraiture that subverts selfie culture. "Cutting Corners Creates More Sides" uses shifting focus to mimic myopia as viewers navigate a bizarre landscape, examining the dynamics of perception and exposing the Machiavellian elements of media — surveillance and seduction.
