Andrew Neumann's latest wall panels move in a variety of new directions, including the use of digital photography ("Rink", "Field"), which are the first in a series that investigate "frozen" vs. "dynamic" time. Works such as "Wipe", "Fan", "Quartet", and "Wire" are time-based devices whose internal mechanisms are purposefully exposed to the viewer, while "Line" challenges the viewer with simple optical motion and scale. Neumann, a 2004 Guggenheim Fellow, continues to explore the use of video technology as a source of self-referentiality, irony, and paradox, debasing the mystery surrounding the transmission of the electronic image. His use of bare plywood to house his devices is a deliberate attempt to counteract the "hi-tech" aura of the electronic — what could be termed "Electronic Folk Art." Andrew Neumann is a Boston-based artist who works in a variety of media, including sculpture, electronic/interactive music, and film and video installation.
