For his tenth exhibition at bitforms gallery, Daniel Rozin presents four new works that explore the outline of the human form through lenses, straps, carbon fiber tubing, and light. Over three decades, Rozin has investigated the mechanisms of reflection using custom software and mechanical engineering. In Contours, he shifts toward the minimal side of reflection, drawing on art historical traditions of the silhouette—from cave paintings to Picasso and Haring—while investigating the tension between line and area, inside and out. The monumental One Candle Mirror features 276 motorized lenses diffracting light from a single candle in total darkness, creating silhouette reflections through the absence of light. RGB Lights Mirror, the 25th piece in his Mechanical Mirrors series begun in 1999, uses aluminum knobs rotating toward colored lights to produce a saturated display that looks deceptively like an LED screen. Contour Mirror employs carbon fiber tubes with yellow caps that align to portray the viewer's outline, while Straps Mirror uses black and white ribbons to investigate contrast between monochromatic areas and one-dimensional lines.
