Alchemical presents a collaborative suite of videos alongside prints by Casey Reas. Reas and technical lead Hye Min Cho trained generative adversarial networks (GANs) using specific films, extracting impressions to position these systems as part of his visual language. From this work evolved the Untitled 1–5 video series. Jan St. Werner's electroacoustic compositions use granular synthesis, transforming acoustic events into manipulable grains that obscure or reveal auditory signals. The collaboration synthesizes image comprehension through an incantation of sound and motion, employing machine learning through a critical process of mediation emphasizing transformation over output. Casey Reas is a UCLA professor and co-creator of Processing (2001). Jan St. Werner, Berlin-based composer and Mouse on Mars member, directs interactive art research at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg. Presented in collaboration with New Art City (online component), with spatial audio by Meyer Sound and Sound Associates.
