A Formal Language celebrates the 50th anniversary (1969–2019) of Manfred Mohr creating artwork with algorithms. The exhibition spans pre-computer pieces from the early 1960s through programmed films, wall reliefs, screen-based works, and computer-generated pieces, demonstrating Mohr's pioneering algorithmic approach decades before it became mainstream in contemporary art. Key milestones include Mohr's first Fortran IV algorithm in 1969; access to plotters at University of Darmstadt and Météorologie Nationale in Paris in 1970; his first solo digital art exhibition at ARC, Musée d'Art Moderne in 1971; the introduction of the cube (1973) and hypercube (1977) as generative structures; color integration in the space.color series (1999); and real-time animations like space.color.motion (2002). His most recent phase, Algorithmic Modulations (2019), uses 12-dimensional hypercube structures.
